About APINI |
The Institute of Environmental Engineering (APINI) was established in 1991 as an independent research unit affiliated to Kaunas University of Technology. In 2000, APINI established an office in Vilnius. APINI provides consultations and training to companies, develops methodic materials in all preventive environmental management areas. APINI specialists assisted more than 150 Lithuanian companies to implement such measures and have extensive practical experience in implementation of environmental management systems and cleaner production, application of environmental management cost assessment, product oriented environmental measures, environmental performance evaluation. APINI has 27 employees: 1 professor, 1 associated professor, 7 Ph.D., 2 researchers, 4 engineers, 12 Ph.D. students.

Institute of Environmental Engineering organizes environmental training course for industrial enterprises. The trainings help to manage the environmental pollution problems, protect the nature, human health and improve the image of the company.
Director of Institute of Environmental Engineering prof. J. K. Staniškis participated in the 16th Annual Internation Sustainable Development Research Conference that took place in Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong from 30th of May to 1th of June 2010. Prof. habil. dr. K. Staniškis read the presentation „ Sustainable Industrial Growth: Strategy and Implementation “ prepared together with co-suthor assoc. prof. dr. Ž. Stasiškiene.
On the 17-28 of May 2010 at KTH Royal Institute of Technology was held the ERASMUS intensive program course “Planning of the Regional Municipal Solid Waste Systems“. The participants of the program were students from Cracow University of Technology (Poland), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and KUT Institute of Environmental Engineering (Lithuania).
The third meeting of 7FP projects’ ENERCOM (Polygeneration of energy, fuels and fertilizers from biomass residues and sewage sluoge) was organized in Graz (Austria) on 29-30 October, 2009. Representatives from KTU Institute of Environmental Engineering presented the results of first years’ activities.
Director of Institute of Environmental Engineering prof. J. K. Staniškis participated in ISWA/APESB World Congress 2009 that took place in Lisbon, Portuguese, from 12th to 15th October 2009. The event is organised by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and the Portuguese Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (APESB).
Director of Institute of Environmental Engineering prof. J. K. Staniškis took part in the meeting of directors of world cleaner production centres that took place in Lucerne, Switzerland. The meeting was organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
On the 29th of October 2009, in Business Leading Centre (BLC) main conference hall (K.Donelaicio str. 62/V.Putvinskio str. 53) at 9 p.m. will be held business forum: Industry. Innovation. Sustainable Development. Competitiveness. How sustainable innovations can promote industry development and competitiveness? The host of the forum is Enterprise Europe Network at Kaunas Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts. Forum partner: Institute of Environmental Engineering at Kaunas University of Technology.
Innovation is widely understood as the driving force in economic growth. It is new products and services, and new technologies of producing, packaging or delivering them which add value to economy, and enable us to improve standards of living. Innovations in sustainable production can make especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) more competitive, profitable and environmentally friendly.
On the 4-17 of May 2009 at the Institute of Environmental Engineering was held the ERASMUS intensive program course “Planning of the Regional Municipal Solid Waste Systems“. On May 29, 2008 dr. Visvaldas Varžinskas from the Institute of Environmental Engineering participated in the international scientific conference „Sustainable development: strategy and practice" organized by Mykolas Riomeris University. Dr. V. Varžinskas made a presentation and presented one of the main tools for sustainable consumption - ecodesig. In this conference participated Minister of Environment of Lithuania Artūra Paulauskas, Rector of MRU prof. Alvydas Pumputis.
Director of the Institute of Environmental Engineering J. K. Staniškis participated in the Ninth Annual Meeting of UNIDO/UNEP National Cleaner Production Centres (NCPCs) and Programmes (NCPPs). The Annual Meeting took place from the 24th to the 26th September 2007 in Semmering, Austria, followed by a training session dedicated to the directors of the National Cleaner Production Centres on CP Centres’ management, which took place on 27th and 28th September 2007. J. K. Staniškis made presentation “CP financing scheme”.
September 18-22, 2007 APINI together with other RECO Project partners – PI Centre for Industrial Sustainable Centre and Taurage regional waste management centres participated in the international conference “From landfilling to incineration. Experience exchange concerning introduction of newest waste management systems“ organized in the framework of project RECO in Warsaw.
In the frame of RECO (Regional Cooperation in Waste Management) project the new waste management plan for Alytus region was created. This plan was done using new tool in waste management planning process – Waste Management Planning System (WAMPS). WAMPS was developed by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute Ltd, within the RECO-project. Project coordinator in Lithuania Centre of Sustainable Industrial Development had tested WAMPS in pilot region Alytus.
